Colour Work.

I have also worked with colour (see sketch book) from my edited photo (below) slight colours were picked up from the high contrast. I took these colours and those from Stan Brakhage's work and created a colour pallet, and from this I then created colour moths to link to the tree tops:

Model Making.

After making the black and white moths to stick in my sketch book as development, I decided to make them to look more delicate to resemble to real life insect. I therefore used tracing paper, I also decided to try out a more 3D take on the piece and strung the origami moths together with thread to create a mobile:

I also experimented with light when taking the photographs of the model. As moths are attracted to light I shinned a torch in different places to give an effect.

Experimentation.

After researching the artists work recorded in the previosu post, I was inspired to create similar effects using paper moths. I started out with a simple tutorial:

Whislt making these i found that in some of the earlier stages they looked like moths before they did butterflies, and as the porject is more focused to moths I made some other smaller ones which resembled moths:

I then experimented with colour and pattern. I printed out some black and white images of the Alexander McQueen research by accident so I have used these to create paper moths:

After making these I found that they resembled my original photographs in task #3 of the field trip, to create imagery which symbolized my text:

When it came to sticking the white butterflies in my sketch book I had to flatten them down, luckily this made them look much more like moths.

However I still prefer the new design due to the more intricate detailing.

installation inspiration.

I have the idea that I would quite like to produce and installation piece. After looking at some of the artists work, I have realized I am interested in media pieces that convey a message. Either through projections or 3D sculptures for example.

To get further inspiration than just from Stan Brakhage, and the creatures themselves I googled 'moth/butterfly installation pieces' these are my findings:

This piece is by artist Paul Villinski "When you take a close look at a beer can, you may notice that they have a really nice arc to them. Artist Paul Villinski has taken that same arc and turned it into butterflies in flight.  Rescuing crushed beer cans from the streets of New York City, Williams carefully cuts each can and creates a marvelous fluttering array. He states that similar to the life of a butterfly, his process is representative of a cultural conversion all its own exploring “themes of transformation and recovery through metamorphosis.”

The Butterfly Installation by Taegan Roberts at The Youth Art Exhibition Titled 'Peel Your Eyes'
artist Taegan Roberts created this beautiful installation at a youth art exhibition in Geelong (a city in Victoria, Australia) called "Peel Your Eyes." Lit underneath with just one white light, 1,000 origami butterflies are stunningly soaring up to the ceiling. Called "Alis Volat Propis" (or "She Flies With Her Own Wings"), the installation is dedicated to the artist's mother who lost her own mother when she was young.

A swarm of butterflies made from vintage atlases. Paper installation (over 300 hand-cut pieces) in the 'Heavymetal' goldsmith workshop window in Cologne.
Designer: Olga Epikhina (Germany)
Material: vintage atlas pages

Industrial artists Katrina Mischer and Thomas Traxler have have created this piece called “Limted Moth” to represent the remaining 800-1,100 moths in the wild. The lamp has a light in the middle with numbered copper moths

Black Cloud, installation by artist Carlos Amorales is comprised of thousands of black paper cutout moths, which are affixed to gallery walls and ceilings in coalescent, unified compositions that occupy as much space as is available. Previous works by Amorales have also utilized silhouette-inspired imagery of insects, arachnids, and other creatures frequently associated with dark connotations.

Day Two: Field Trip. Task #2 & #3

#2

"when we remove a sense our others are heightened"

The second task was to eliminate one of our senses and see the space from a completely different perspective. We were paired up and blind folded one another and took it in turns to guide the other round. We were then asked to record our thoughts and feelings through innovative ways.

I recorded this stage in my sketch book, through creative work and words.

#3

This task was recording imagery from the woods in relation to the text given. We were able to use a range of media of our choice. I chose photography and manipulated the photos to give them the intended feel of what i was searching for.

For some of my photos I wanted to take them based around one of the inspirational quotes I found from the text (quote and photographs below)...

"Soaring round the tree tops until it looked as if a vast net with thousands of black knots in it had been cast up into the air"

I zoomed in on the tree tops and took photos of the leaves and twigs, to me this creates the image of clusters of moths flying around. These images also look similar to those of Stan Brakhage's piece 'Mothlights'. Especially the second edited photo as it has the blurred coloured edges around the moth like patterns.

I also took photos of the stones and textures around the woods. I manipulated the photos by blurring them by moving the camera whilst taking the picture. To me this has created the patterns of a moths wings...

Finally whilst it was raining I managed to capture the rain drops, although they don't quite look like the moths as intended I still found it quite magical and thought they looked like glow worms
